Visa Lighting uses a variety of standards in the design, engineering, production, safety, and performance of lighting fixtures

These are used for safety listings:

  • UL 1598: Luminaires – for permanently installed fixtures wired to line voltage – this includes listing for “dry” (no moisture present), “damp” (condensation or occasional moisture may be present), and “wet” (moisture will be present…generally outdoors) locations. It also covers listings for insulation contact (Type-IC)
  • UL 2108: Low Voltage Lighting Systems – for permanently installed fixtures wired to low voltage (<60VDC). This includes listing for “dry,” “damp,” and “wet” locations and listings for insulation contact (Type-IC)
  • UL 153: Portable Electric Luminaires – for portable luminaires (table lamps, floor lamps) that are connected to wall outlets

For performance certification, a selection of products are tested/certified to these standards (if required):

  • IEC 60529: Degrees of Protection Provided by Enclosures - for ingress protection (IP) ratings
  • City of Chicago Electrical Code Section 18-27-300.22(c)(2) – for City of Chicago Environmental Air (CCEA) certification (aka “Chicago Plenum”)
  • NSF/ANSI 2: Food Handling Equipment – for “NSF” sanitation ratings
  • IEC 62262: Degrees of Protection Provided by Enclosures for Electrical Equipment Against External Mechanical Impacts – for impact (IK) ratings

During the design and engineering of fixtures, we also use the following standards & recommended practices guide development as applicable (and approved as needed):

  • Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (42 U.S.C. Sec. 12101) – for maximum allowable fixture protrusion from walls in paths of circulation and egress
  • Patient Safety Standards, Materials and Systems Guidelines Recommended by the New York State Office of Mental Health – for products intended for installation in behavioral health environments
  • ANSI/IES LM-80 and ANSI/IES TM-21 – for calculating and reporting lumen maintenance
  • IES Recommended Practices including but not limited to ANSI/IES RP-1, ANSI/IES RP-3, ANSI/IES RP-4, ANSI/IES RP-9, ANSI/IES RP-10, ANSI/IES/ALA RP-11, ANSI/IES RP-28, ANSI/IES RP-29, ANSI/IES RP-42, and ANSI/IES RP-43, depending on intended use
  • NFPA 101: Life Safety Code – for products that may be used in path of egress applications
  • NFPA 70: National Electric Code

These standards & approved methods are used for performance (photometric) testing:

ANSI/IES LM-28
ANSI/IES LM-75
ANSI/IES LM-79
ANSI/IES LM-63
